When I was 7 years old, my friend threw a soccer ball at my face and knocked out one of my front teeth. That was the last time I lost a tooth without sitting in a dentist's chair. Since then, I have had 11 teeth extracted from my mouth. For some reason, my baby teeth don't want to leave. Tomorrow will be number 12 and 13. Nothing makes me more annoyed, mad and upset then hearing that I need to have more teeth pulled. So for anyone who has not experienced the pleasure of having a tooth extracted, let me share the process with you.
After I am in the dentist chair with a light shining on me, my dentists takes a Q-Tip and rubs my gums with a numbing gel that actually does not work very well. Then she proceeds to stick a huge needle into my gums filled with anethstesia. Because the gel does not really work, the needle hurts like heck. To make sure my gums are numb, she takes the huge needle, refills it and plunges it back into my gums.
Then she lets me sit for a little while so my mouth can get numb. When I can no longer feel my mouth, she comes at me with needles, peels back the gums around my teeth and starts to wiggle the tooth. It feels like a general pressure under my tooth. Once, I was fortunate enough to have a tooth crack. That was even more unpleasant because my tooth came out in pieces. When the tooth is loose enough, she uses giant tweezers to pull it out.
Once the tooth is out, she stuffs gauze in my mouth till the bleeding stops – which it never does until a few hours later. She gives me a bunch more gauze so I can keep changing it.
When I leave the dentist I am relieved that it is over. But I am also scared to find out how my mouth will feel when the anethstesia wears off. After the 3-4 hours of watching random movies or TV shows, the anethstesia wears off, and it aches a lot. The recovery is probably the most uncomfortable phase in the whole process because my mouth aches, I still have gauze stuffed in my mouth and I can not eat unless I want to chew the food with my front teeth.
Getting teeth pulled is by far the worst experience of my life and it is just my luck that I have to experience it time after time. Although one might call me a veteran at getting teeth pulled, each time it is just as bad and hurts the same.
Last Thursday was the cultural arts festival, as many know for this day at school you will be but into a group and assigned three activities. My activities were capoeira, Mongolian BBQ and a fly fishing activity. I personally really liked the people in my group, and my activities, and I knew it was going to be a fun day.
My first activity was capoeira or Brazilian fight-dance. My group first went to the library to learn a little about the Brazilian culture and the background of capoeira. After learning about capoeira we learned a couple moves, first we learned the basics, like how to move around the ring, we also learned a few kicks that were very fun to do. I had a blast, but now it was time for the Mongolian BBQ.
After capoeira I was hungry and ready to eat something with Mr. Cribb, Fitz, and Mr. Smith. As soon as we got there Dylan V. began to stack as much meat on to his skewer for he was hungry and ready to eat, he immediately scolded for being to American. After Fitz told us of his adventures in Asia we cooked up some meat and noodles and feasted, It was amazing and delicious.
After our Mongolian meal, we learned how to cast a fly fishing rod and how to tie the fly itself. It was quite cool seeing people fly fish in the video that Mr. Scott showed us and Trotsky helped a lot when showing us how to cast the fly.
Later in the day we found out that there was one more activity to do after lunch. First there was a presentation about music and how it has changed threw the years, then we got to write our own rap or poem that we later shared to the 8th and 9th grade.
I always like the cultural arts festival, I have a lot of fun learning about other countries and cultures from around the world, this one was very fun and I am lucky to get to see all the flags around campus one more time next year.
In many ways, The Hunger Games and Divergent are very similar books. In both books there is a young girl with a loving family in a post apocalyptic world. In these post apocalyptic worlds, the society and government are set up in a way to prevent another war, however, the strict, cruel and contrived rules make these worlds very flawed. Both girls are brave and need to face challenges beyond their years. In the Hunger Games, Katniss must survive the killing of all the tributes so that her family and District can receive food. In Divergent, Tris must survive brutal Dauntless initiation rites so that she does not end up "factionless" and homeless. In both books, the heroines go head on and finish on top. They also have male characters that are their supporters and admire their bravery. Later in their stories, both Katniss and Tris take on battles with their governments. As a reader, I was drawn into both books immediately and could not put them down. They are both books are great reads and very similar but the cosepts of each new world are very different and interesting in its own way.
I am sure that most of us are very exited for summer. I am one of those people, I can not wait for summer. Part of the reason I love summer is simply I don't have to spend 6 hours in a class room (no offense Fitz.) another reason is that I am doing a lot of very fun things over vacation.
Today (Tue. April 22) I got my bike tuned and got it ready for this summer (Most of the time I like to think ahead of time.) I will be taking a 2 week Overland bike trip. I will be going to Cape Cod and Nantucket biking and average of 20 miles a day. Last summer I took a hiking trip with Clem Tarpey, we hiked four mountains all around New England, I had a great time so I thought of doing something similar this summer. I am also doing many other things like a golf camp with some friends and even going to Switzerland for 2 weeks with my family. I cant wait until summer, it will be a blast. What are you doing over the summer
Finally it was starting to get warm and all the remaining snow had melted. Spring was here... or so we thought. I woke up, like every morning that day I put on a pair of Vineyard Vines shorts and began to walk down stairs for a quick breakfast. Then I saw it, SNOW! I was devastated, by now winter was my worst enemy, and spring was a super hero, but it seems that spring was defeated. I walked back up stairs and switched my bright green shorts for a pair of lengthy pants. Happily through out that day the snow was melting in front of our eyes and by the end of the day it was almost all gone!
All threw out this nice long weakened it has been so nice, it has been warm. The sun was constantly shining and flowers have been popping out of the ground everywhere. The one thing that i am really happy about is that now I don't have to bring a hat and gloves to my soccer practice or have to were a pair of long underwear to lax. I can finally wear shorts and t-shirts, who knows mabye I
As many know the UEFA Champions League games have been going on. The quarter finals were taken place over the last two weeks and for some the results were shocking and for others not so much. The for teams that are moving on the the semi-finals are, Real Madrid, Athletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
The two games that I were very surprised about were the chelsea vs. PSG and Barcelona vs. Athletico Madrid. The Barca, Athletico game was won by Athletico Madrid 1-0. The one goal was scored early on in the game by Koke (not so great a goal) and the rest of the game Athletico got many chances. some say that the cross bar was Barcas best player, which was hit multiple times through out the game. Barcelona were not there best and were easily kicked out of the biggest tournament of the year.
With the PSG, Chelsea game it was more of an even game that was played well by both teams. Unfortunately PSG's star player Zlatan Ibrahimovic was injured at the time and was unable to play. Many times during the game the ball fell to Cavani, he would always miss the easy goals that Zlatan would score effortlessly. The game ended 2-0 and booted PSG out of the Champions League.
The other games that were played that day were very predictable games that had no big surprises (Real Madrid vs Dortmund and Bayern Munich vs Manchester United.)
Although PSG and Barcelona (my favorite teams) are both out of the tournament I will still the watching the great games between the four best teams in the world.
After the semi-finals draw I think that Chelsea will beat Athletico Madrid and Bayern Munich will beat Real Madrid and will also go on to beat Chelsea and defend there title as the worlds best team.
What are your predictions?
"If there is no struggle, then there is no progress."
Two years ago the soccer team that I played for started to go down hill. Most of our best players left the team to go to a "better" team. The team from then on progressively got worse and worse, until the point were we only won three games the whole season, which was an all time low for the team.
Happily not everyone left the team and some key players stayed (like Sergio our goalie,) and helped shape the new team. ever since that horrible season we began to get better and better. The team was obviously not good enough because still players were leaving the team (some good, some bad.) The numbers of players on our team was quite consistent, but now only three players who were on the team two years ago remained on the original team.
The team still was getting better and better, this was proved this winter when we began our futsol season. We were amazing we only lost three games (one was the finals of the whole tournament.) It was proved once again when we came in second in a tournament over march break (thanks to Charlie Fitz's team.) Still we are getting better, and we are all very exited to see how we do during the rest of the regular season. This shows that only at ones all time low can things only get better, and it will.
I know this is a little late, but during march break I went to the wonderful island of St. John. Me and my family go down to the small island twice a year for 2-3 weeks and every time we have a wonderful time. We go to the beach we do fun activities and over all we just relax. This year my brother brought down a friend from school, personally he is not my favorite but we overall got along well and had lots of fun.
There are many things that we do at St. John, like parasailing or scuba diving, this year we just hung at the beach and and chilled. I think that trip really restored my sanity and let me relax and get away from all the school work we were doing the weeks before. Now that spring is coming it will start to get a little warmer and be just a little more like my home away from home, I cant wait to go back in the summer and be able to comletely relax again.
If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.
The quote above is a good one, except for when it is winter in April. Everyone liked the winter until it became March and everyones attitude changed, the only thing was it did not change for the good. Most people, including myself and Mr.Star, were completely done with winter, snow and the cold and we could not wait until the flowers start to appear and the grass becomes lush and green.
The season is not the only thing that is changing, the second semester has ended and the third has arrived, for some quite quick and for others it took its time. As the third semester arrived many students in the eighth grade are applying to other schools, I know that most people were disappointed about the results about the schools that they did/did not get into or exited to tell everyone about the school that they got into. These last months will be a great, but sad one, having to say good by to a lot of my good friends that will be leaving. Although it will be tough to leave all those great friends, the ninth grade will be full of great opportunities. For those who are staying at Fenn great, i am sure it will be a great year and for all the people leaving, I wish you the best at your new school and I hope you succeed greatly wherever you are going.
